FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Maui Comedy TV Show Moku Moku Premieres December 8th
[Makawao, Maui, HI] – [December 5, 2023] – Moku Moku, a new comedy television series filmed entirely on the island of Maui, is set to premiere on December 8th. The show follows three local friends as they navigate everyday life in Upcountry Maui while trying to survive the troubles of paradise one laugh at a time.
Moku Moku has been praised for its irreverent humor and its authentic portrayal of life in rural Maui. The show has also been compared to popular, edgy comedies like Sterlin Harjo’s Reservation Dogs and Jared Keeso’s Letterkenny.
“We’re so excited to share Moku Moku with the world finally,” said Kawika Hoke, Showrunner of Moku Moku. “We’ve been working on this for over a year, and we’re incredibly proud of what we’ve created… We’re looking at building an economy around a full slate of projects with what we call – The Mokuverse.”
Hoke is changing the way indie films do business by challenging the norms that have maintained the status quo of Hollywood. His goal is to educate and push filmmakers to keep ownership of their films, and distribute and connect with audiences personally on their terms. He launched Manawa Kau, a Hawaiian Motion Picture Company intent to get Hawaiians on the islands and across the continental United States back to work after the long dry spell created by the strikes.
Moku Moku is a non-union production that was funded by a community of local investors. The show was filmed entirely on location in Makawao and throughout the Upcountry region of Maui. “We’re committed to telling stories authentic to Maui and its people,” said Hoke. “We believe that Moku Moku is a show that everyone can relate to, regardless of where they’re from.”
The cast and crew selflessly put filming on hold to help the victims of the devastating Maui wildfires that occurred less than a week shy of the end of their principal photography. The production team transformed their headquarters into a donation center and partnered with Maui Rapid Response to provide aid and relief to those affected by the disaster.
“We want to create a new economic engine that will not only create jobs here in Maui but will bring back many of those talented people who were forced to leave because there wasn’t enough work here. We have been in high gear getting things in place and making new partnerships nationwide. We see a way forward to help make things better on Maui and make a positive contribution to our economy beyond tourism.”
Moku Moku premieres at 12:00 PM Hawaii-Aleutian Standard Time [UTC-10] on December 8th directly available at www.808mokumoku.com, with episodes premiering weekly. Then on February 2, 2024, on TVOD platforms such as Amazon, AppleTV, Tubi, and Google Play.
